Winter storm and extreme cold kill 13 across the United States
New York, Jan. 26 (Hibya) – Late Sunday, as a severe winter storm continued its destructive path across the United States, at least 13 people were killed and about one million customers were left without power. Ice, sleet and freezing rain overloaded power lines and trees.
Flight cancellations reached their highest level since the pandemic, and numerous closures were announced at federal, state and local offices as well as schools, at least through Monday.
Alongside power outages in the eastern United States, meteorologists and emergency management officials warned of extreme cold following the storm on Monday.

Brian Hurley, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center, said, “Even after the precipitation ends, the dangers are not over. In many areas experiencing heavy icing, freezing rain, sleet and ongoing snowfall, temperatures will remain below zero throughout the week. We are concerned about people being left without electricity.”
The major storm spread into the Mid-Atlantic late Sunday and moved toward the Northeast during the day.
As snow and ice continue, the weather service and other federal, state and local authorities urged residents to stay off the roads as much as possible, take care of themselves and their pets, and check on neighbors and the elderly. Extreme cold remains one of the leading causes of weather-related deaths nationwide.
