Wong: Our thoughts are with those suffering under Taliban oppression
Canberra, December 6 (Hibya) – Australian Foreign Minister Senator Penny Wong said that the Australian government has established an autonomous sanctions framework — the first of its kind in the world regarding Afghanistan — as part of ongoing efforts to hold the Taliban accountable.
Minister Wong stated that with the entry into force of this framework, the first sanctions lists have also been released, describing the move as unprecedented globally.
She noted that financial sanctions and travel bans have been imposed on three so-called Taliban “ministers” and the so-called Taliban “Chief Justice” due to their roles in the oppression of women and girls and for undermining good governance and the rule of law.
“Our thoughts are with those suffering under Taliban oppression, and with the Afghan community in Australia. Since the fall of Kabul, the Australian Government has provided more than 260 million dollars in humanitarian assistance, largely focused on women and girls.”
