The 2026 International Counterterrorism Symposium was held today in Yining, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China.

Approximately 100 representatives from more than 20 countries and international organizations attended the symposium. Held under the theme "Addressing New Challenges of Terrorism: Strengthening State Responsibility and Enhancing International Solidarity," the event featured three panel sessions.

The panels focused on the challenges and solutions related to regional counterterrorism efforts in areas affected by geopolitical conflicts, the misuse of emerging technologies and corresponding countermeasures, as well as ways to eliminate the root causes of terrorism.

The Chinese side stated that it opposes double standards in counterterrorism efforts and called on all countries to fulfill their international responsibilities and strengthen multilateral cooperation. It also stressed that the international community should develop a common understanding and act in a coordinated manner against the terrorist threat.

The meeting also presented the economic and social progress achieved in Xinjiang over more than 70 years, as well as the region's continued stability. In addition, the practices and outcomes of counterterrorism and de-radicalization efforts were introduced, which, according to the meeting, demonstrated the terrorist and violent nature of the "East Turkestan Islamic Movement" (ETIM) and the dangers it poses.
