Canadian Foreign Minister Anand made a statement regarding Greenland’s future. Anand said, “Greenland’s future belongs to the people of Greenland,” stressing that respect for this principle is fundamental to Canada’s relations with Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark.

Speaking at a time when sovereignty in the Arctic region is drawing an unprecedented level of international attention, Anand said she met Greenlandic politician Mute B. Egede in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland.

Anand said they discussed the region’s growing strategic importance and opportunities to strengthen cooperation between peoples. She said the historical ties that have connected Inuit communities in Canada and Greenland for generations demonstrate that the future of the North should be shaped by those who live there.
