At least 16 dead in garment factory fire in Bangladesh
Stockholm, October 15 (Hibya) – At least 16 people were killed in a major fire at a garment factory in Bangladesh. Authorities have warned that the death toll may rise.
Firefighters said that the bodies of 16 people had been recovered but were burned beyond recognition.
The fire broke out at the factory around noon and was extinguished three hours later. However, authorities reported that an adjacent chemical warehouse was still burning.
In densely populated Bangladesh, major fires are relatively common due to lax safety standards and inadequate infrastructure. Hundreds of people have died in similar incidents in recent years.
Fire chief Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury told local media that the victims likely died “instantly” after inhaling “highly toxic gas.”
Chowdhury added that police and military officials were trying to locate the owners of the factory and warehouse, and that an investigation was ongoing to determine whether the warehouse was operating legally.
