Canadian Foreign Minister Anand issued a statement regarding the Iranian authorities' use of the death penalty against protesters and civilians exercising their fundamental freedoms.

Anand said Canada, together with like-minded countries, had led a joint statement opposing the Iranian authorities' continued use of the death penalty against protesters and civilians.

Anand stated that people who peacefully express their views or call for change should not be sentenced to death, detained or threatened.

Calling on Iran to respect human rights and release those arbitrarily detained, Anand said concrete steps should be taken in response to the legitimate demands of the Iranian people.
