China Protests Japan's Remarks on 80th Victory Anniversary Celebrations
Moscow, August 26 (Hibya) - Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a press conference on Tuesday that Beijing had sent a strong protest note to Tokyo after Japan requested other countries not to participate in the 80th anniversary celebrations of the victory over Japan in China.
Earlier, Kyodo News Agency, citing numerous diplomatic sources, reported that Japan, through its embassies and other overseas missions, had informed other countries that China's commemorative events excessively emphasized the past and carried a strong anti-Japanese tone. The Japanese side also advised carefully considering the possibility of heads of state attending these events.
Guo Jiakun stressed that this year China is commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese people in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the victory in World War II to "remember history, honor martyrs, foster peace, and move forward into the future."
"Any country that is honest about history, sincerely learns lessons from it, and genuinely strives for peaceful development will have no doubts about this, and certainly will not object," he added.
The diplomat also urged Tokyo to acknowledge and reflect on the history of aggression and to completely sever ties with militarism.
China will commemorate the "Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression" and the "80th anniversary of the end of World War II" with a military parade on September 3 at Tiananmen Square in Beijing.
Earlier, Wu Zeke, spokesperson of the General Staff of the Central Military Commission of the PRC, said that 45 military units would participate in the Beijing parade. The total duration of the parade will be about 70 minutes.
