European Council President António Costa met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as part of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Costa said the EU values its partnership with Pakistan, noting that the Strategic Engagement Plan reflects the scope of the partnership and the shared commitment to democracy, the rule of law, human rights and civic space.

Costa said, “The EU values its partnership with Pakistan. Our Strategic Engagement Plan reflects the scope of this partnership and our shared commitment to democracy, the rule of law, human rights and civic space. We are working together on stability and security. We thanked the Prime Minister for his mediation initiative in the conflict between the United States and Iran. Pakistan plays an important role in supporting de-escalation, dialogue and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. We discussed how we can advance our partnership in areas ranging from trade to tackling irregular migration.”
