EU calls for respect for international law regarding Venezuela
Stockholm, January 5 (Hibya) — EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas called on “all actors to exercise calm and restraint” amid uncertainty over the Trump administration’s transition plan for Venezuela following Maduro’s ouster. All member states except Hungary backed the statement published by Kallas on Sunday night.
The statement led by Kallas was supported by 26 of the EU’s 27 member states, with only Hungary withholding support. Budapest is a close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, who over the weekend described the military operation that ousted Maduro as “spectacular” and hinted that the United States would temporarily administer Venezuela, without specifying an end date.
The statement said: “The EU recalls that the principles of international law and the UN Charter must be respected in all circumstances. The EU calls on all actors to show calm and restraint in order to prevent escalation and to ensure a peaceful solution to the crisis.
Respect for the will of the Venezuelan people remains the only way to restore democracy in Venezuela and resolve the current crisis.”
