European Union (EU) Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said that Ireland’s experience within the European Union demonstrates how countries coming together contributes to peace.

In a statement following her meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin in Dublin, Kos said that EU accession negotiations with candidate countries are gaining momentum.

Welcoming Ireland’s strong support for EU enlargement, Kos emphasized the importance of supporting reform processes in candidate countries during Ireland’s upcoming Presidency term.

Kos noted that progress on candidate countries’ paths toward EU membership would continue to be encouraged in order to make the European Union stronger.
