European ministers warn Israel over death penalty expansion
Berlin, March 30 (Hibya) – The foreign ministers of Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom warned against a bill in Israel that would significantly expand the scope of the death penalty.
As the foreign ministers of Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom, they expressed deep concern over a bill that could be adopted next week and would significantly broaden the application of the death penalty in Israel.
The ministers emphasized particular concern that the bill would effectively have a discriminatory nature and stated that its adoption risks undermining Israel’s commitment to democratic principles.
The ministers noted that the death penalty is a form of punishment that lacks deterrence and is inhumane and degrading, and therefore they oppose it wherever it is applied in the world.
The European ministers called on the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, and the government to abandon the proposed regulation.
