Greece's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a written statement regarding Türkiye's remarks on the demilitarization of the Aegean islands.

The ministry argued that Greece determines its foreign policy independently and is not part of any instrument aimed at destabilizing the region. The statement said Greece contributes to regional and international peace and stability and does not pose a threat to any country.

The statement said Greece has the right to ensure the defense and security of its entire territory, while alleging that Türkiye's “unilateral claims” regarding the demilitarization of the Aegean islands lack a basis in international law and have previously been rejected.

The statement argued that the status of the Greek islands in the eastern Aegean is determined by international agreements currently in force and that Greece has the right to take the necessary measures to exercise its legitimate right of self-defense.

Greece's Ministry of Foreign Affairs argued that characterizing the strengthening of the defensive capacity of Greek territory as a “threat” is unfounded. The statement alleged that Türkiye continues to maintain a threat of war (casus belli) if Greece exercises one of its lawful sovereign rights.

The ministry said Greece remains committed to good-neighborly relations and dialogue, but that this requires full respect for international law and refraining from threats and unfounded demands.
