Iceland aims to accelerate vote on EU accession
Brussels, February 23 (Hibya) – According to an exclusive report by Euro News, a vote on restarting Iceland’s EU membership talks is being considered as early as August, according to two people familiar with the country’s accession preparations.
The referendum on resuming membership negotiations had been expected to take place in 2027, but it could occur as early as this August.
This comes at a time when momentum for EU enlargement is increasing; Brussels is working on a plan that could grant Ukraine partial membership as early as next year, and Montenegro, which is leading in the accession process, closed another stage of negotiations last month.
Reykjavík’s ruling coalition had promised to hold a referendum by 2027 on restarting EU accession talks after the previous government froze negotiations in 2013. However, this timeline is being accelerated amid geopolitical turbulence, following Washington’s decision to impose tariffs on Iceland and U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to annex Greenland.
