IOC President says Russia likely to participate in 2026 Italy Olympics
Moscow, July 27 (Hibya) – International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry said the organization is considering allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to take part in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, though no final decision has yet been made.
The Olympics will be held from February 6 to 22 in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
Coventry told nordique.net, “We will not rush decisions in the September and December meetings, but we will likely proceed in the same direction as we did in Paris.”
Following the Russia-Ukraine war, many international sports federations banned Russian participation based on IOC recommendations. After thorough checks, 15 licensed Russian athletes were accepted as neutral competitors at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. Most winter sports federations currently do not allow Russian athletes to enter the 2026 Winter Games qualifiers.
