Israel stops boat carrying activists attempting to deliver aid to Gaza
Stockholm, July 27 (Hibya) - On Saturday, a boat carrying activists and journalists trying to deliver aid to Gaza was stopped by Israeli forces. A pro-Palestinian group claimed the crew was "illegally" detained.
The boat Handala, led by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was stopped about 50 kilometers off the Egyptian coast and 100 kilometers west of Gaza. An online tracking tool showed the boat's course had been traced.
In a post on X, Israel’s Foreign Ministry said the navy prevented the boat from "illegally entering the maritime zone off the coast of Gaza."
"The vessel is safely heading to Israeli shores. All passengers are safe. Unauthorized attempts to break the blockade are dangerous, illegal, and undermine ongoing humanitarian efforts," the post said.
The group stated that among the 21 activists aboard were two Australians — journalist Tania "Tan" Safi and human rights activist Robert Martin — along with two Al Jazeera reporters and French politicians Emma Fourreau and Gabrielle Cathala.
