Kallas: Passage through the Strait of Hormuz must remain free
Brussels, April 21 (Hibya) – EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas made remarks on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, the sanctions regime against Iran, and nuclear issues.
Kaja Kallas made a statement on the security of transit routes in the region and diplomatic processes with Iran.
Criticizing the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, Kallas said: “Regardless of whether the Strait is open or closed, daily U-turns are reckless. Passage through the strait must remain free.”
Referring to the EU’s new sanctions decision, Kallas stated: “The EU has reached a political agreement to expand the sanctions regime to also target those who violate freedom of navigation.”
Emphasizing regional cooperation regarding Iran’s nuclear and military program, Kallas said: “None of us want to see a nuclear-armed Iran. We agree with our regional partners that a lasting solution must address not only the nuclear issue but also other matters, including Iran’s missile program and its continued support for terrorist groups.”
