European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas issued a statement on the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks carried out in the United States on September 11, 2001. Kallas said the attacks changed the course of history, stating: “Twenty-five years ago, the September 11 terrorist attacks changed the course of history.”

Kallas recalled that 2,977 people lost their lives in the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania, saying: “Today, we honor the 2,977 people who lost their lives on September 11.” She noted that the attacks shattered lives and fundamentally changed world affairs.

Kallas said that Europe and the United States acted together following the attacks and noted that NATO invoked Article 5 for the first and only time in its history. She stated that European allies mobilized to defend the United States, hundreds of thousands of European troops served shoulder to shoulder with their American allies in Afghanistan, and many lost their lives.

Kallas said that even 25 years later, Europe remains committed to strong relations with the United States, adding: “Our transatlantic bond has always made both sides of the Atlantic safer and stronger.”
