After the meeting, von der Leyen stated that she emphasized two main priorities.

She said: “I conveyed to President Zelensky and the leaders attending the meeting our two core priorities: supporting Ukraine and increasing Europe’s defense readiness.”

Highlighting the importance of financial assistance, she noted: “Providing financial support will help ensure Ukraine’s survival and is a vital step for Europe’s defense.”

Regarding pressure on Russia, von der Leyen said: “We are aware of the sharp impact our sanctions have on Russia’s war economy.”

She added: “The longer Putin continues his war—spilling blood, taking lives, and destroying Ukraine’s infrastructure—the higher the costs will be for Russia.”

On European defense, she said: “We are reviewing the SAFE plans submitted by member states; Ukraine appears in 15 of the 19 plans.”

Concerning Russia’s attitude, von der Leyen stated: “Russia repeatedly deceives and buys time. It mocks diplomacy while pretending to seek peace.”
