Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic commented on his country's goal of joining the European Union in a speech at a reception held to mark German Unity Day.

Milatovic said German Unity Day carries one of the powerful messages of modern Europe, stating that “even the deepest divisions can be overcome when there is vision, political courage and determination.”

Stating that Montenegro has a historic European opportunity, Milatovic said, “Our goal is clear: to become the 28th member of the European Union by 2028.”

Milatovic said this goal could be achieved through serious reforms, strong and independent institutions, the rule of law, a more competitive economy and results that citizens can feel in their daily lives. He added that Germany has been one of Montenegro's most important and reliable partners since the beginning of its European journey.

Milatovic noted that they particularly appreciate Germany's support.
