United Nations (UN) Day for South-South Cooperation is observed to draw attention to solidarity, cooperation and the sharing of practical solutions among countries of the Global South.

The theme for 2026 has been set as “Solidarity Rising: A Global Alliance for Inclusive and Innovative Development.” Under the theme, it is emphasized that South-South and triangular cooperation can help provide the partnerships, expertise and support needed to scale up proven solutions.

Countries of the Global South are reported to be increasing the sharing of solutions in areas such as renewable energy, digital innovation, public health, sustainable agriculture, disaster preparedness, education and public services. These exchanges are said to help adapt successful practices to countries’ own needs and accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.

As part of 2026, the “Global Alliance for South-South and Triangular Cooperation,” to be facilitated by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), is also planned to be launched. The voluntary platform is intended to bring together countries’ priorities with expertise, partnership and support opportunities, helping turn shared experience into concrete action.

Key messages identified for South-South cooperation in 2026 emphasize that solidarity across the Global South is growing, existing successful solutions need to be scaled up, and the new Global Alliance will help connect needs with solutions.

South-South and triangular cooperation are also said to be capable of helping countries build expertise and capacity, diversify partnerships and advance the Sustainable Development Goals based on national priorities, while governments, United Nations entities, development partners, financial institutions, academia, civil society and the private sector can all play a role in scaling up successful solutions.
