OECD chief says it would be beneficial for Europeans to listen to Mario Draghi
Stockholm, Feb. 4 (Hibya) – OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann told Euronews that appetite for multilateral trade remains strong despite tariffs, adding that Europe should take into account the recommendations put forward by former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi to continue the EU’s “success story.”
Speaking at the World Governments Summit in Dubai, Cormann said the European Union is a “unique success story” but faces structural challenges in a changing world where multilateral trade and international rules are being tested.
Cormann said it would be wise for EU leaders to listen to Draghi’s recommendations. Draghi authored a 2024 report calling for a radical change in how the EU functions and reiterated on Monday that the bloc should be governed in the spirit of a “true federation” rather than as a mosaic of individual countries.
“Mario Draghi is an extraordinary leader,” Cormann told Euronews. “It would be appropriate for everyone to listen to him very carefully.”
“Europe is an overwhelmingly successful continent, but it faces challenges. The EU has to position itself in the best possible way under changing conditions,” he added.
European Union leaders will meet at an informal gathering in Belgium next week, at the invitation of European Council President António Costa, with Draghi also set to attend.
