Postal services in many countries stopped delivering parcels to the U.S.
Stockholm, August 26 (Hibya) – Postal services in many countries decided, starting Friday, to suspend the shipment of small parcels to the United States, citing that they would no longer be exempt from customs duties. Australia and Taiwan announced such a decision this morning.
Australia joined the group of countries that temporarily suspended almost all postal shipments to the United States and Puerto Rico due to complex and constantly changing customs regulations for small consignments, set to take effect on Friday, August 29.
Postal service officials said that having to resort to such measures was frustrating, but still necessary. The Trump administration had announced that, starting from that day, the exemption from customs duties for small parcels would be lifted.
Australia Post announced the decision this morning, but clarified that gifts, parcels, and documents worth under $100 would be exempt. Australia joined countries such as Denmark, Belgium, Germany, India, and New Zealand.
Japan’s postal service will no longer accept parcels worth more than $100 that do not contain retail goods for delivery to the United States. The Taiwanese government also announced this morning that from now on no parcels containing goods will be sent to the United States.
