Protests against immigration raids in Los Angeles intensify
Los Angeles, June 9 (Hibya) – Protesters continue to clash with law enforcement in the dark on the third day of protests against immigration raids that swept California over the weekend.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) announced on Sunday night that the entire downtown area of Los Angeles was declared an "unlawful assembly zone." This marks a significant expansion of an earlier order issued in front of the Metropolitan Detention Center earlier that afternoon.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell stated in a late Sunday press conference that ten protesters had been arrested during clashes with police in downtown Los Angeles. CNN witnessed police using tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the crowd earlier in the day, and some protesters were seen being struck and shoved during arrests.
According to Governor Gavin Newsom’s office, about 300 members of the California National Guard are deployed in Los Angeles. Newsom officially requested that the Trump administration cancel what he called an "illegal deployment" and allow local authorities to restore order.
The U.S. Northern Command announced on Sunday evening that approximately 500 active-duty Marines were in a “ready-to-deploy status” and would be sent from the combat center in Twentynine Palms, California, if unrest in the city continued. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned on Saturday that Marines were preparing for deployment.
Traffic disruptions occurred throughout the day, including on the crucial US 101 Highway connecting Los Angeles to other California cities like San Francisco. The 101 was completely closed for nearly 90 minutes in the afternoon after hundreds of protesters entered the roadway. It was later reopened—then closed again until further notice after protesters threw objects at police vehicles.
