Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tajani made statements on the protection and sustainable management of water resources.
Tajani said the water situation is one of the greatest challenges facing Europe and the international community. He stated that rising temperatures and drought are affecting groundwater, damaging agricultural land and causing major losses for businesses and the agricultural sector.
Emphasizing the need to make water networks more efficient, prevent waste and protect water reserves, Tajani announced the appointment of lawyer Marco Rago as the International Special Envoy for Water Policies of Italy's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Tajani said Rago's task will be to promote Italian diplomatic efforts for the sustainable management of water resources and highlight the strategic link between water policies and energy, agriculture, the environment and development cooperation.
Tajani noted that Rago will represent Italy at major multilateral forums and contribute to strengthening the country's role in international dialogue on water, adding that Italy aims to take a leading role in water dialogue.
Tajani said the next major event in this context will be held in Rome on September 29, when the first Euro-Mediterranean Water Forum organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be inaugurated.
