US President Donald Trump emphasized his determination to reduce the foreign trade deficit and achieve balance, saying he could carry out his threat to cut off or restrict trade with some countries.

Sharing his views on trade policy, Trump was asked, “You threatened to cut off trade with a country with which you have a trade deficit. Will you really do it?” He replied, “I will do it with some countries. We do not want to run trade deficits with countries. We want to have a trade surplus or at least reach the break-even point.”

Continuing his remarks and referring to trade relations with Ireland and sectoral regulations, Trump said, “On behalf of the United States, I will remove the tariffs on Irish whiskey.”
