Trump signals new tariffs on semiconductor chips
Washington, April 14 (Hibya) – U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he plans to impose import tariffs on semiconductors next week, noting that some companies in the sector would be granted flexibility.
This move suggests that the exemption of smartphones and computers from the reciprocal tariffs imposed by Trump on China may be short-lived, as the President seeks to reset trade in the semiconductor sector.
During his return trip from Florida to Washington on Sunday aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters: "We wanted to make this easier for many companies, because we want to manufacture our chips, semiconductors, and other things in our own country."
Trump declined to say whether certain products, such as smartphones, would still be exempt but added:
"You have to show some flexibility. No one should be that rigid."
