UN agencies and humanitarian organizations warn of fuel shortage in Gaza
New York, July 13 (Hibya) – The United Nations has warned that fuel shortages in Gaza have reached critical levels.
The UN emphasized that fuel is the backbone of survival in Gaza: "It powers hospitals, water systems, sanitation networks, ambulances, and all aspects of humanitarian operations. Fuel is needed to move the fleet that delivers essential goods across Gaza and to run the network of bakeries producing fresh bread for affected populations. Without fuel, these lifelines will disappear for 2.1 million people."
It noted that after nearly two years of war, the people of Gaza are facing extreme hardship, including widespread food insecurity: "When fuel runs out, the burden becomes unbearable for a population already on the brink of starvation. Without enough fuel, UN agencies responding to the crisis will be forced to shut down operations entirely, directly impacting all essential services in Gaza. This means no healthcare, clean water, or aid delivery capacity."
It was stressed that without sufficient fuel, humanitarian efforts in Gaza are at risk of collapsing. It added:
"Hospitals are already in darkness, maternity, neonatal, and intensive care units are overwhelmed, and ambulances can no longer move. Roads and transportation will be blocked, and those in need will be stranded. Telecom systems will shut down, life-saving coordination will be disrupted, and families will be cut off from critical information and one another. Without fuel, bakeries and community kitchens will cease to operate. A sufficient and sustained fuel supply must be ensured to keep life-saving operations going in Gaza."
