U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar attacked with an unknown liquid
Minneapolis, January 28 (Hibya) – According to a statement by the Minneapolis police, Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar was attacked with an unknown substance when an audience member sprayed liquid at her using a syringe during a town hall meeting she was hosting.
Omar was not injured and continued speaking. She later wrote on X, “I’m okay. I’m a survivor, so this small instigator will not stop me from doing my job. I will not let bullies win.”
According to the local sheriff’s office, 55-year-old Anthony James Kazmierczak was arrested on a charge of third-degree assault.
After the incident, Democrat Omar told those in the room, “We will continue… we are Minnesotans and we are strong.”
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said in a social media post, “Violence and intimidation have no place in Minneapolis. We can disagree without putting people at risk… This kind of behavior will not be tolerated in our city.”
In 2019, Omar became the first Somali American, the first African-born American, and one of the first two Muslim American women to serve in the U.S. Congress.
The event Omar attended was one of the regular town halls she hosts. About 100 people gathered in a basement in north Minneapolis to receive information about the presence of federal immigration authorities in the city and to ask questions following the second killing of a U.S. citizen by immigration authorities this month.
