World condemns Israel’s attack on hospital and journalists in Gaza
Stockholm, August 26 (Hibya) – Canada, Egypt, Iran and Saudi Arabia are among the countries that condemned Israel’s attacks on Nasser Hospital. These attacks killed at least 21 people, including 5 journalists, and were described by Tehran as a “barbaric war crime.”
International human rights and humanitarian organizations, including Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and the Foreign Press Association, expressed “anger” and “shock” at the attack, which also targeted health workers.
Israel regularly strikes hospitals, claiming without evidence that Hamas uses them for military purposes. It also regularly kills journalists in Gaza, sometimes citing alleged links to Hamas as justification.
Monday’s attacks killed Reuters reporter Hussam al-Masri, Associated Press journalist Mariam Abu Dagga, Al Jazeera correspondent Mohammed Salam, photojournalist Muaz Abu Taha, and Quds Feed’s Ahmed Abu Aziz. Another Reuters reporter, Hatem Khaled, was injured.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned Israel’s attack and called on the international community to take action. Regional Director Sara Qudah said: “Israel continues to kill journalists in Gaza live on air while the world watches and fails to take decisive action against some of the most horrific attacks on the press in recent history. These unlawful killings must stop. Perpetrators must no longer go unpunished.”
The Associated Press expressed shock and sadness at the deaths of Dagga and the other journalists killed with her. The agency said: “We are doing everything we can to ensure our journalists in Gaza, who continue to provide crucial eyewitness reporting under difficult and dangerous conditions, remain safe.”
Reuters expressed deep sorrow at the death of Masri and the injury of Khaled. A spokesperson said: “We are urgently seeking more information and have asked Gaza and Israeli authorities to help us secure urgent medical assistance for Hatem.”
According to CPJ, at least 193 Palestinian journalists have been killed since October 7, 2023. This number exceeds the total of journalists killed worldwide over the past three years.
