Xi Jinping Held a Phone Call with Donald Trump
Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone call yesterday evening with U.S. President Donald Trump.
During the conversation, Xi Jinping recalled that he and Donald Trump met last month in Busan, South Korea, where they reached a broad consensus on many issues. He noted that this meeting set the course and provided momentum for the steady advancement of the enormous vessel that is China–U.S. relations, while also sending a positive signal to the world.
Xi emphasized that since the Busan meeting, China–U.S. relations have generally moved toward greater stability—a development welcomed by both countries and by the international community. He stressed that the facts once again prove: when the two countries cooperate, both sides win; when they confront each other, both sides suffer.
Highlighting that the “achievements and shared prosperity gained through bilateral cooperation” are visible and tangible realities, Xi Jinping said both sides must maintain this momentum, continue moving in the right direction, adhere to the principles of equality, respect, and mutual benefit, expand the list of cooperation, reduce the list of problems, achieve more positive progress, open new areas of cooperation, and bring greater well-being to the peoples of both nations and the world.
Xi Jinping also reiterated China’s principled stance on the Taiwan issue. He underlined that Taiwan’s return to China is an important part of the post–World War II international order. Xi stated that China and the United States had fought side by side against fascism and militarism, and that both sides now need to work even more closely to safeguard the outcomes of World War II.
U.S. President Donald Trump remarked that President Xi Jinping is a great leader, adding that their meeting in Busan took place in a positive atmosphere. He said he fully agrees with Xi Jinping’s views on China–U.S. relations and that the understandings reached in Busan are currently being implemented.
Trump noted China’s significant role in securing victory in World War II and emphasized that the United States understands the importance of the Taiwan issue for China.
The two leaders also discussed the Ukraine crisis. Xi Jinping stated that China supports all efforts conducive to achieving peace, calling on all parties to set aside differences, reach a fair and lasting peace agreement as soon as possible, and resolve the crisis at its roots.
