Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced that construction has begun on the C$2.3 billion expansion project at the Port of Montreal's Contrecoeur site.

Anand emphasized the importance of the project along the St. Lawrence River for Canada's economic future, saying, “One of the projects to build our country is now taking shape along the St. Lawrence River and moving an important part of our economic future forward.”

Noting that the Port of Montreal is the country's second-largest port, Anand said the completion of the Contrecoeur expansion project will increase the port's capacity by 60 percent.

Anand said that once the project is completed, the new terminal will be able to handle 1.15 million containers annually, stating, “When the new terminal becomes operational, it will be able to handle up to 1.15 million containers each year. This will give Canadian businesses greater access to global markets and strengthen one of our most important trade gateways.”
