Budrys: Bucha is a symbol of Russian war crimes and Ukraine’s resilience
Kyiv, March 31 (Hibya) – Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys said that four years have passed since the Bucha massacre and stressed that Russia must be held accountable for its actions in Ukraine.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys said in his statement that what happened in Bucha horrified the world because of the scale and inhumanity of Russia’s actions. He emphasized that for many people, this marked a turning point that revealed the true nature of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The town of Bucha in Ukraine’s Kyiv region came to global attention in 2022 after images and allegations emerged of civilians being killed during the Russian occupation. Stressing that Bucha is not only a place where a tragedy occurred, Budrys said: “Bucha has now become a symbol of both Russian war crimes and Ukraine’s resilience.”
Budrys said that he was in Bucha together with the foreign ministers of the European Union and that they delivered a message of support to Ukraine, adding that they would continue to demand accountability for the war crimes he said Russia had committed. Budrys also stated that Lithuania is determined to support Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction.
After Russia withdrew from the area around Kyiv, the Ukrainian army regained control of the town of Bucha on April 2, 2022, and images showing that many civilians had lost their lives there were seen around the world.
