Bulgarian Prime Minister Jelyazkov resigns
Sofia, December 11 (Hibya) – In Bulgaria, Prime Minister Jelyazkov and the government he leads officially resigned today.
According to information conveyed by Bulgaria News Agency Director General Zdravko Kovachev, Bulgarian Prime Minister Jelyazkov and his government officially resigned today. The announcement was made during a brief press conference at the Council of Ministers, following hours of intense speculation among political observers and media outlets.
In the statement read by the Prime Minister, the main reasons cited for the cabinet’s decision were “the loss of political support and the need to restore public trust.” Jelyazkov emphasized that the step was taken “in the interest of institutional stability,” and he thanked the ministers and coalition partners who served alongside him.
The resignation immediately triggered a constitutional procedure requiring the President to consult parliamentary groups and mandate the formation of a new government. Initial reactions from opposition parties ranged from calls for snap elections to demands for a technocratic or interim cabinet.
The markets remained stable, but analysts warn that prolonged uncertainty could affect investor confidence if political negotiations fail to produce a clear roadmap.
The President is expected to make a public statement later today.
The Jelyazkov government will continue to perform its duties until a new Council of Ministers is elected.
