Cooper: Hong Kong authorities must put an end to Jimmy Lai’s ordeal
London, February 9 (Hibya) – UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper commented on the prison sentence handed down to Jimmy Lai.
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper issued a statement following the court ruling against 78-year-old Jimmy Lai.
Criticising the judicial process and the severity of the sentence, Cooper said: “Twenty years for a 78-year-old man effectively amounts to a life sentence, following a politically motivated trial under a law designed to silence critics of China.”
She concluded her statement by saying: “Hong Kong authorities must put an end to this appalling situation faced by Jimmy Lai and allow him to be reunited with his family.”
