Denmark summons U.S. ambassador for talks
Copenhagen, December 23 (Hibya) – After U.S. President Donald Trump said yesterday that the United States “needs Greenland for national security” and “must have it,” Denmark summoned the U.S. ambassador for talks.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen told DR News that Denmark would summon the U.S. ambassador for a meeting.
Rasmussen said: “This is completely unacceptable. Therefore, after consulting with our Greenlandic colleagues, we decided to summon the U.S. ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”
The foreign minister added: “First of all, we want to make it clear to the United States that it cannot interfere in the affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark.”
He continued: “Secondly, we want an explanation. We know that there is a U.S. ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark and that we have relations with him. Therefore, it deeply saddens me when the president suddenly appoints a special envoy.”
Asked whether this amounted to an escalation in relations with the United States, Rasmussen replied: “Yes. We have made intensive efforts through all diplomatic channels to remove this issue.”
