Markets across the region remained calm and largely unchanged, while the UK and Italian stock markets underperformed by closing the day in negative territory.

In the UK, the FTSE 100 index fell 1.66 percent to 10,489.04 points. Italy's FTSE MIB index declined 1.22 percent to close at 51,817.25 points.

Meanwhile, prices remained unchanged across many of the region's leading indices. Germany's DAX index closed unchanged (UNCH) at 24,897.45 points, while France's CAC 40 index ended the day unchanged at 8,252.66 points.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index also closed unchanged (UNCH), holding steady at 635.91 points.
