EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

The meeting addressed diplomatic opportunities to end the war between the US and Iran and the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Kallas noted that there had been no fees or charges for passage through the Strait of Hormuz before the war and said no fees should be imposed after the war either.

"Navigation must be free and unobstructed in both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait," Kallas said, adding that she had also raised the issue of domestic repression in Iran during the meeting. Kallas drew attention to the sharp increase in executions and death sentences in the country.
