Lazzarini: UN extends UNRWA’s mandate for another three years
New York, 5 December (Hibya) – Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), announced that the UN General Assembly has decided to extend UNRWA’s mandate for another three years.
Lazzarini said he welcomed the UN General Assembly’s decision to extend UNRWA’s mandate for an additional three years.
He stated that the decision reflects the strong solidarity people around the world feel toward Palestinian refugees, adding: “It is also a sign that the international community acknowledges its responsibility to support the humanitarian needs and development of Palestinian refugees until a just and lasting solution to their decades-long plight is found.”
Lazzarini emphasized that what matters now is turning this decision into a genuine commitment and securing sufficient funding to enable UNRWA to fully carry out its mandate.
