Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva made a statement regarding the future leadership structure of the United Nations and the candidacy of Michelle Bachelet.

Stressing the need to open a new chapter in the organization’s history, Lula da Silva said: “Brazil is honored to support Michelle Bachelet’s candidacy for UN Secretary-General. After eighty years of history, the time has finally come for the organization to be led by a woman.”

Listing Bachelet’s trailblazing achievements and leadership qualities, Lula da Silva stated: “Bachelet’s career stands out for its pioneering spirit. She was the first woman to serve twice as President of Chile and the first woman in her country to hold the posts of Minister of Defense and Minister of Health. Within the UN system, she played a decisive role in the establishment and strengthening of UN Women.”

Emphasizing Bachelet’s international competence, Lula da Silva concluded: “As UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, she worked to protect the most vulnerable. Her experience and commitment to multilateralism qualify her to lead the UN in an international environment marked by conflict, inequality, and democratic backsliding.”
