Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto outlined the legal steps taken by the Hungarian government against the European Union’s restrictions on Russian energy imports.

Szijjarto said: “Today, we launched legal action at the European Court of Justice against the REPowerEU regulation that bans the import of Russian energy and requested its annulment.”

Stating that they presented three main arguments for the annulment of the regulation, Szijjarto said: “First, energy imports can only be banned through sanctions that require unanimity. This regulation was adopted under the guise of a trade policy measure. Second, the EU Treaties clearly state that each member state decides on its own energy sources and suppliers.”

Referring to the principle of energy solidarity, Szijjarto added: “Third, the principle of energy solidarity requires security of energy supply for all member states. This decision, particularly in Hungary’s case, clearly violates this principle. Only more expensive and less reliable alternatives are available.”

Szijjarto concluded: “Without Russian oil and natural gas, our energy security cannot be guaranteed, and low energy costs for Hungarian families are not sustainable.”
