Maduro says he is open to talks with the US on drug trafficking
Stockholm, Jan. 2 (Hibya) – Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said on Thursday, following weeks of mounting pressure against his government, that he is open to talks with the United States on drug trafficking and oil.
In an interview with Venezuela’s state television, Maduro said he is ready for dialogue with the United States “wherever they want and whenever they want.”
He also dodged a question about claims by US President Donald Trump that the United States had attacked a port facility in Venezuela; the attack was reportedly carried out by the CIA.
The remarks came as US forces over the past three months have targeted boats suspected of drug trafficking via the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific.
In total, more than 30 attacks on boats have been carried out as part of what the Trump administration calls the “war on drugs,” and more than 110 people have been killed since the US carried out its first attack on a vessel in international waters on Sept. 2.
The latest attack took place on Wednesday; according to the US military, five people on board were killed in an attack on two boats alleged to be carrying drugs.
