Orban reacts to the EU’s request for Ukraine funding
Budapest, 19 November (Hibya) – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban strongly reacted to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s request for additional financial contributions from EU member states to support Ukraine and finance the war.
Orban stated that von der Leyen is asking for an additional €135 billion for the next two years, noting that this amount equals 65% of Hungary’s annual economic output, the equivalent of seven years of pensions for all Hungarian retirees, and nearly three-quarters of the EU’s annual budget. He added that this sum "does not actually exist" and is being "conjured up like magic."
The Prime Minister added that Brussels is proposing a renewed joint European borrowing mechanism, which would mean shifting the financial burden of the Russia–Ukraine war onto future generations.
Orban also criticized the expectation that Hungary contribute to the fund, saying: “They expect contributions from a country that is fined €1 million per day for not admitting migrants, and that faces financial sanctions because of its stance on the war and gender ideology.”
Calling the request “beyond impossible and categorically absurd,” Orban said Hungary’s response would not be delayed.
