In Japan, the Nikkei 225 index fell 2.17% to 68,223.86 points, while China's Shanghai Composite Index declined 1.63% to 3,975.49 points. Australia's ASX 200 index slipped 0.47% to 8,789.40 points, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index lost 0.56% to trade at 23,484.76 points.
In contrast, India's Nifty 50 index rose 0.17% to 24,471.60 points, making it the only major index in the region to post gains.
