South Korea’s former president faces death penalty in insurrection trial
Stockholm, February 19 (Hibya) - A South Korean court is set to announce its verdict today in the insurrection trial of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Prosecutors have sought the death penalty, arguing that Yoon was the architect of an attempt to impose military rule in December 2024.
However, since South Korea no longer carries out executions, the death penalty effectively means life imprisonment.
Yoon’s order lasted only six hours but shook the country. It paralyzed the remainder of the government and led to his party losing the subsequent election.
It also polarized South Korea, a division clearly visible in the protests held by his supporters gathered outside the court today.
Yoon is already serving a prison sentence for another offense related to the failed martial law order. He still faces two additional trials.
