Trump increases defense spending while proposing cuts to social programs
Washington, May 3 (Hibya) – In a budget plan that strongly emphasizes the White House’s desire to project military strength and deter immigration, Donald Trump proposes significant cuts to social programs like healthcare and education, while planning major increases in spending for defense and the Department of Homeland Security.
With $163 billion in cuts to discretionary non-defense spending, funding for environmental and renewable energy projects will be reduced, as well as for the FBI, which Trump claims was weaponized against him during Joe Biden’s presidency. Cuts are also planned for the DEA and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
Despite these restrictions on social programs, the administration plans to raise the Pentagon budget by 13%, exceeding $1 trillion. This contradicts Trump’s repeated pledges to end America’s “endless wars” in the Middle East and elsewhere.
The White House's so-called “tight budget” for 2026 represents a 22.6% reduction compared to projected spending for the current fiscal year ending September 30.
