Trump’s threat: Tariffs will be imposed on countries opposing the Greenland plan
Washington, January 17 (Hibya) – U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on countries that oppose his ambitions to annex Greenland.
Trump said at a meeting at the White House that he could impose tariffs on “countries that do not comply” regarding Greenland, an autonomous territory controlled by Denmark.
Speaking at a White House meeting on rural health care on Friday, Trump said: “I may impose tariffs on countries that do not reach an agreement on Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security.”
He did not specify which countries could be affected by the new tariffs or what authority he would use to apply such import duties to achieve his objective.
In addition to Denmark and Greenland, other countries also oppose his plans, and many people in the United States are skeptical about the annexation. As Trump was speaking, a bipartisan congressional delegation was visiting Greenland to show support for the region.
The 11-member group also included Republicans who voiced concerns about the president’s calls for the United States to take control of Greenland in some way on national security grounds.
Trump has previously said that Greenland is vital to U.S. security and that Washington would obtain the island “the easy way” or “the hard way,” meaning buying it or taking it by force.
