UK condemns Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure
London, October 16 (Hibya) – The UK’s Permanent Representative to the OSCE, Ambassador Neil Holland, condemned Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure.
Ambassador Holland said that Russia has once again weaponized winter by carrying out a series of coordinated attacks on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure in recent weeks.
He noted that these attacks have severely disrupted gas production and struck critical storage facilities in western Ukraine. Holland added that the October 10 attacks on thermal power plants left half of Kyiv without electricity and many without access to water.
Holland stressed that the United Kingdom strongly condemns Russia’s ongoing attacks on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure, particularly its local gas production capacity, saying:
“Restoring this capacity is both difficult and costly; repairs often take months and increase the need for gas imports during the winter. As the country enters winter and heating demand rises, the impact of such attacks becomes even greater.”
He added: “We call on Russia to comply with its obligations under international humanitarian law and the OSCE’s principles. Russia must not deliberately target civilian infrastructure that meets the basic needs of the Ukrainian people and must withdraw from Ukraine’s internationally recognized territories.”
