UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday strongly condemned the attack on a mosque in Islamabad. The death toll rose to 32, while around 170 people were injured.

Deputy Secretary-General Farhan Haq said in a statement: “The Secretary-General condemns in the strongest terms the attack against worshippers gathered today in a mosque in Islamabad.”

The statement added: “The Secretary-General reiterates that attacks against civilians and places of worship are unacceptable and underscores the need to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.”

It was noted that Guterres reaffirmed solidarity with the government and people of Pakistan in efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism.

According to Islamabad Deputy Governor Irfan Nawaz Memon, the explosion occurred at a Shia mosque in the Shehzad Kasaba area of Islamabad, and authorities declared an emergency at all major nearby hospitals.
