WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus: Peace is the best medicine
Geneva, September 21 (Hibya) – World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized that peace is not just an ideal, but also a fundamental condition for public health.
In his assessment of international peace and health issues, he stressed that the phrase “Peace is the best medicine” is not a slogan but a reality backed by concrete data.
Ghebreyesus drew attention to the devastating effects of conflict and insecurity on public health and shared the following data:
“70% of global disease outbreaks occur in conflict zones.
Half of all child deaths happen in these regions.
One in five people struggles with mental health problems.”
The WHO Director-General underlined that peace does not simply mean the absence of war: “Peace is the foundation of survival, recovery, and a healthy life.”
He also pointed out that defending peace requires great courage, stating: “The bravest are those who choose peace.”
