Bulgaria’s Yantra and Belitsa rivers reach critical levels after heavy rainfall
Sofia, October 9 (Hibya) – The Yantra and Belitsa rivers in Bulgaria rose sharply overnight, reaching critical levels early this morning in Veliko Tarnovo, Kilifarevo, and Debelets, posing a flood risk. Around 5:00 a.m., water levels peaked, prompting authorities to issue an alert.
Emergency response teams, including firefighters and police, were stationed overnight at key points in the lowest areas of Veliko Tarnovo to monitor the situation.
Mayor Daniel Panov confirmed that despite dangerously high water levels, no residential or cultural buildings were flooded or damaged.
According to the mayor, the Yantra River in Veliko Tarnovo reached a height of 4.5 meters, just below the critical threshold of 5.5 meters.
In an interview with Bulgarian National Radio, Panov said: “The overflow danger has passed.” However, he added that several landslides continue in the area, including near Trapezitsa and along the Gorna Oryahovitsa road. The Road Infrastructure Agency is expected to clear debris and inspect all bridges and culverts once river levels subside.
